Vita Nuova was originally formed in 1996
as a start-up software company. Vita Nuova had a very specific
remit: to exploit the emerging Inferno technology from Lucent Bell Labs.
Vita Nuova rapidly established a strategic partnership with Lucent's
Inferno Business Unit and throughout 1997, 98 and 99 created a profitable
company based on Inferno technical services.
Vita Nuova is based on the University of York Science Park close to the
Computing Science & Electronics faculties. The University of York has one of
the premier computing departments in the UK from which many of Vita Nuova's
staff have been recruited.
In March 2000 a new company, Vita Nuova Holdings Ltd, was formed as a result of obtaining the
exclusive, world-wide rights to develop and market the Inferno Operating
System from Lucent Technologies Bell Labs together with an equity
investment from Lucent and a UK investor. The company also announced that
it would be the first company to provide a physical distribution of the Plan
9 operating system also from Bell Labs.
Vita Nuova is a company with the same independent spirit as Plan 9 and
Inferno's creators.
