John Bates - Projects Director and Co-Founder
John Bates has worked in the computer industry for more than fifteen years and holds an
Honours degree in Mathematics and a Masters degree in Statistics from the School of Mathematics
at the University of Leeds. John started his career as senior software engineer at Sea-Change
Ltd. where he first met and worked with Michael Jeffrey. At Sea-Change John was responsible
for the cross-platform portability of all the Company's products (covering DOS, OS/2 and UNIX
systems). John co-founded HCI Ltd. with Michael Jeffrey and he is also a Director of
Auctioneering Systems Consultants Ltd. John is an acknowledged C and C++ expert and has been
responsible for the technical delivery of several significant software systems over the past
ten years, including a 4GL report writer, an ODBC implementation, an SQL interpreter and the
communication layers underpinning many large scale distributed applications. Following the
formation of Vita Nuova, John had acted as a consultant to the Inferno business division at
Lucent Technologies, where he had provided advice on the performance tuning of a TCP/IP
implementation within Inferno and the development of a suite of performance analysis software
for Inferno.
